Lighting is one of the most important features to consider when designing a space and choosing the right size fixture is crucial to achieving a balanced look. These tips will help you find the perfect chandelier size:
Size Does Matter
If you’re selecting lighting for a new home and don’t have a dining table yet, follow these steps:
- Measure the length and width of the room
- Add the two measurements together
- Convert the sum to inches
For example: If you have a 14×20 foot room, a 34 inch fixture will fit perfectly.
If you’ve already picked out a dining table, that’s great! You’ll want to select a fixture that’s large enough to light the whole table, making sure that you’re not leaving any guests in the dark. The fixture’s diameter should be ½ to ⅔ the width of the table. For example: If you have a 96 n table, you should stay within the range of 48-64” for your fixture.
How Low Can You Go?
When hanging a chandelier above your dining room table, the general rule-of-thumb for a standard 8 ft ceiling is to keep 30-36” from the bottom of the fixture to your table. Make sure you leave a minimum 6” from the edge of the fixture and the edge of the table on each side to ensure a balanced look.
How To Hang Multiple Pendants Above Your Kitchen Island
We’re here to keep it simple, so again make sure the fixture is 30-36” from the bottom of the fixture to your kitchen island. For multiple pendants, we recommend hanging each pendant 30” apart and 6” from the countertop edge.
